Particle backgrounds in canvas and three.js

Particles read as alive without pulling focus, which is why they end up behind so many headers. Ten of these are Canvas 2D loops of about 4 KB with no library; the last two are three.js scenes for when you want depth and tens of thousands of points.

Each one answers the pointer in its own way: the flock flees it, embers bend toward it, the plexus links to it. The particle count is a control on every one, so you can thin a field until it sits quietly behind body text.

The 12 layers, in order

  1. Plexus

    N° 0208 · node network links

Drifting nodes joined by lines that fade as they stretch; the pointer becomes a node everything nearby links to. The network look for data and AI products.

  2. Thousands of particles steered by a slowly turning flow field, leaving ink-like trails; the pointer becomes a vortex.

  3. N° 0195 · wandering glow points

Lazy random walks with each fly blinking on its own rhythm and a soft halo; they gather toward a resting pointer.

  4. Sparks rising from below the frame in wavering paths, most burning out partway up; the pointer is a draught that bends them.

  5. Snow at three depths, big soft flakes near and fine dust far, drifting on a slow wind the pointer can gust.

  6. A night sky in three depths with pointer parallax and a shooting star every few seconds.

  7. Paper rectangles tumbling in 3D as they fall, catching light on one face. Light by default, for celebrations and thank-you pages.

  8. N° 0264 · flocking agents

A flock steering by separation, alignment and cohesion; the pointer is a hawk and the flock wheels away from it.

  9. Comets on elliptical orbits dragging fading tails, bent by the pointer's gravity as they pass.

  10. A still sky of a few hundred twinkling stars, some with four-point flares. The calmest field in the set.

  11. The three.js step up: 24,000 points in a slow current with an additive glow, for when canvas dots look too flat.

  12. N° 0645 · sampled-text point morph

Points that assemble into words and drift apart again, so a short message is the particle field itself.
