404 page templates that get people back on track

A good 404 admits the page is missing and gets the visitor somewhere useful. Each page here keeps the ways back in plain view and adds one idea of its own: a transit map, a maze, a bowl to mend, an owl that watches the pointer.

Every template in the catalogue also ships its own 404 in the same file, styled to match, and the template's page links it under its utility pages. Use these standalone pages when the error page should be a small moment of its own.

The 9 layers, in order

  1. Reads the broken address, suggests the closest real page ('one letter out') and offers a keyboard type-ahead search. The most useful 404 here.

  2. The missing page is a closed station on a line map of the site; pick another station and it says how many stops away it is.

  3. A fresh 9 × 9 maze each visit, played with arrows, WASD, a pad or a swipe, with shortcuts beside it for people in a hurry.

  4. Digits built from square tiles knocked out of line, a glitch every few seconds and a 'Fix the grid' button that snaps them home.

  5. The zero is an owl whose eyes follow the pointer or keyboard focus; press it and it blinks and suggests a book.

  6. A tethered line-art astronaut drifting beside the message, which quotes the missing address back with three ways home.

  7. Drag three shards of a bowl back together, or move them with the arrow keys, and the cracks fill with gold.

  8. The 404 and the requested path decode out of random glyphs once, with a request ID you can copy for support.

  9. Four flat error scenes (a 404 signpost, an unplugged cable, a maintenance cone, a crashed window) for a 404 you build yourself.
